Designers: Do you want to make more impact?
Being a designer is the most wanted creative career.
You get to create whatever you imagine.
A piece of media, product or service.
That’s the dream if you are creative.
Then why when you start leaving the dream you start complaining about:
• Unrealistic client expectations
• Lack of creative freedom
• Lack of communication
• Lack of appreciation
• Tight deadlines
• Scope creep
As designers, we have a flawed mindset.
We are artists and visionaries stuck at a service job.
The thing that most designers haven’t fully realised is that design is a creative SERVICE, not a creative expression.
As a senior designer I work with founders I hear countless stories of designer drama.
• It feels like they talk in a different language.
• It takes too long to finish a design.
• They get offended by feedback.
• Focus on the wrong thing.
It’s not your fault.
You just got sold the wrong dream.
And after living it myself I’m here to sell you a better one.
Most designers will do better as writers.
Here is why.
As a designer you research, facilitate and document other’s vision.
As a writer, you can create and sell your own products.
This way you have full control of the vision of what you creating.
As a designer, once you are ready you have to wait for someone to produce whatever you design.
And sometimes your design doesn’t see the market at all.
As a writer, you can ship to the market every day if you like.
As a designer your work is perishable. The market needs to change the trend change your design needs to change.
As a writer, you have the opportunity to create something that lasts decades. Impact generations after you. Leave your mark.
As a writer, you can be the visionary.
Be the decision-maker.
Be creative.
And the person who hires designers and makes them question their career choices.
